Going Under

Atticus Morin is a covert agent on the Planc, the platform city built over drowned Manhattan. He survived the bombing that killed his two partners, and his new assignment, a dead-end black-market case, was meant as a vacation.

Then he breaks into a government lab director’s apartment and finds a classified file with his name in it, and a line he can’t stop rereading. Subject believes himself the only survivor of a car crash. Atticus does believe it. He has no memories from before it.

By morning the director’s assistant, a woman he got out of that apartment alive, is dead with his card in her pocket. A city detective ties her wound to sixteen killings the police have been filing as vandalism. A department that officially doesn’t exist sends armed agents to the detective’s building, and Atticus’s handler orders him to stand down.

Somebody wrote the past Atticus remembers. He wants to know who, and why they needed him to read that file.
